My First Club W Experience

Category: Life

I first heard about Club W through a friend who hadn’t yet placed an order but thought the idea of belonging to a monthly wine club was right up my alley. I signed up on the website and loved the Palate Profile quiz. For my first Monthly Experience, I chose the bottles recommended for me and threw in three more because there were too many wines I wanted to try! A few days later, I was delighted to get my first box of wine.

I chose the Porter & Plot Pinot Noir, the Porter & Plot Pinot Gris, the Full Sleeve White Blend, the Butcherblock Cabernet Sauvignon, the Miller Syrah, and the Brethren of the Road Red Blend.

The first wines I opened were the Porter & Plot Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir for a dinner party with a group of friends. Most of us had just gotten back from a trip to Japan which included lots of “all-you-can-drink-and-eat” meals, so we decided to go with healthier dishes for dinner. I put together a make-it-yourself salad bar complete with romaine and iceberg lettuce, turkey, salami, tomatoes, avocado, and other toppings, as well as homemade salad dressing. I opened both the Pinot Gris and the Pinot Noir so that people could have their choice of red or white, and I thought it would be fun to try the two together. The Pinot Gris was a great complement to our salads. The crispness really complemented the various flavors in the salad and the slight acidity mellowed out the lemon juice in the salad dressing. The Pinot Noir had great fruit flavor with the added complexity of spice and black pepper. It paired well with the salad ingredients, too, especially the turkey, salami, and Swiss cheese.

Last summer, I traveled through Europe and took cooking classes during my stay in Florence. I had been promising to make the homemade asparagus risotto recipe I learned for my family since returning, but between schedules and asparagus not being in season, the opportunity hadn't yet come up. When asparagus came in my biweekly Farm Fresh to You box, I figured it was finally time. Already knowing that asparagus is a difficult food to pair with wine, I went to a blog post in Club W’s Juice for guidance. It suggested a wine with some acidity and minerality, so I thought I would try the Full Sleeve White Blend, which is made of 75 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 25 percent Viognier. The robust but fresh white blend paired great with the richness of the risotto.

The remaining three bottles didn’t last long. I enjoyed them on their own at home or with friends, and they all tasted great. I can’t wait to get my next shipment! I love getting packages, but I especially like enjoying the wines in a form that I can drink and pair with food.
